H.I. McDunnough
H.I. McDunnough, a former convict known as "Hi" to his wife Edwina, is a man desperate to escape his cycle of incarceration and build a normal life, particularly a family, despite his questionable past and Ed's infertility, which he describes as her insides being a "rocky place where my seed could find no purchase". He is eccentric and prone to flowery language, yet possesses a genuine desire to be a changed man and a responsible father, a hope that leads him to the drastic act of kidnapping one of the Arizona quintuplets after learning of their abundance. His journey is marked by a series of escalating criminal mishaps and existential dread, including the terrifying manifestation of a "lone biker of apocalypse" in his dreams, symbolizing the chaos he feels he has unleashed.
